My hometown made the switch in 1992 from girls 6on6 to the game you see today. We were 2A at the time (approximately 55-75 kids per class). Rules were as snaqwells described.

I don't have a rule book reference for you - but several more experianced than me have told me that under 5 seconds (or so) keep a running tally in your head - if you get a couple seconds over you...
