Unhappy Shot Clock

If you have a shot clock, then its best to match that count or have a good story. Nothing like making a 10-second call with the shot clock showing only 8 seconds gone, or crossing the division line...

CA - no reset

As stated above, shot clock rules are by state. In California a held ball which results in the offensive team retaining possession does NOT reset the shot clock.

Red face More Encouragement!

I think you will find that most of us on this board can echo the same sentiment. As each of us try to encourage you, maybe we offer a little different twist.

You didn't indicate if this is a...

I call the Push much tighter. If the player is moved more than 6" or so I call the foul, unless s/he got the ball anyway. Then I call it only if I need to send a message, i.e., start cleaning...

Talking 1st of 2 FTs?

How about this escape?

What happens if you notice the 6 players after you give the ball to the shooter for the first of 2 free throws. You could swallow your whistle, let the player shoot,...

Back on topic....

One more thought on the call-it or ignore-it subject.... I think a key point is that referees that are suggesting that there are situations where they do not call a game "by the book" are not...

Now change #1 to 7 seconds. It is still legal if the ball is thrown in such a way that it will come down and strike the floor inbounds, or one of the other 9 players. (You said "straight up" which...

This is not an easy concept to understand. I'd ask you younger ref's who have been doing this for awhile to try to remember back when you were grappling with this, and have some compassion. For us...

I announce "5 seconds" rather than "closely guarded." Don't know why, and wouldn't suggest one over the other. That just seems to be what is used in this area.

Of course the first part of the...

A: 3-points (easy)
B: How far did he drag it? I'm not real tight on that if it drug a bit in being lifted, I might count the 3. If this is MS then I'll let them drag the foot a couple of inches...

We've all agreed that on a throw-in, if the inbounder steps over the line it is a violation.

Yesterday I attended the rules interpretation meeting for Northern California, and now I'm not so sure....

Smile Our Church League

Our church runs a youth league for the community. While we do not require anyone to sign a behavior statement, I am intollerant of negative comments. I will and have thrown parents and coaches out...

Question Last few years?

I don't recall any provision for this before. However, it has been my personal standard practice. I am not willing to have a player remove a medical alert identification, get hurt, be rushed to the...

I rarely call a foul for contact on the hand, even after the ball has left the hand. The wrist is a foul.

If the contact is on purpose this one is easy - intentional.

If it is accidental in my judgment (and they're paying me to be there and to use my judgment) then I've got a no-call. Sure, the (new)...

I'd call a double-dribble.

I don't buy the "no force" stuff because that suggests A1 can just drop the ball, move and grab it, and repeat all over the court.

I'd explain it by saying that the...

Elbow fouls

Chuck, congrats. I'd like for you to elaborate on the no-elbow-fouls comment. Why do they avoid those? How do they handle it? It is a lot more than a 2-hour drive to NYC from California, so give...

Sooner press

Actually, I do agree that the Sooners should have pressed a bit. They didn't even try it until the very end. If they had better speed, why not? And with the IU point playing on a weak ankle, why...

Sorry, Mark, but just walking near one of those hot ones would kill you.

Juulie, I've never experienced anything but the plain glazed version. I assume they have others, but why?

Unhappy Rethinking....

As to the no-foul on Price.... Reading that paragraph would suggest a no-call. Price clearly made no attempt to go through Fife. Yeah, the contact was so sever it sent Fife backwards several feet...

Legal

It is for me. It is the same (IMO) as reaching the ball through the plane. The defense can then grab it, but the point is there is no penalty on the offense for reaching the ball through. We all...
