The problem

continues to be with defensive players that set up in the way, be it at home plate, or elsewhere (1 of Mr. Rowe's favorite gripes for years has been 1st. basemen set up wrong! I agree with his...

Any definition

will need to address when there are no fences, walls, etc. How does one decide where to draw the lines? I hesitate to suggest that it be the crew chief's judgement, and all the variety of...

Regarding being questioned recently...

could your eyesight be changing? Specifically, depth perception.

At the risk of inviting blind umpire humor to a serious question, this could be a factor. As we age, eyesight changes, sometimes to...

Reply to Rookie Dude's question

I had intentionally not been specific about the game because I didn't want to turn the question about the rules into a critique, but, yes it was. In fact, a cross-state playoff with officials from a...

Decorum issue

This is why I asked the question about the specifics of the rules. It struck me, as an official in other sports, as poorly handled. But before being too critical of any situation, I always want to...

Dakota

Didn't drive a car (while officiating), I waved flags.

There is no penalty for obstruction, just a warning, the move-over flag.

But if you ignore that warning, the penalty for that is the black...

Thanks Nevada, and now..

more questions.

How does the combination of direct & indirect Technicals work? Or are they totally separate. Example: Coach has received 1 indirect technical for something, then later gets 1...

I'm not a Basketball referee (I do Softball, Baseball, & am involved with Football), so I don't have a current rule book. Question arose from a discussion about an unfortunate sequence of events I...

Baseball

In the past, there was soccer (got too old & slow) & auto racing (life changes).

Am too involved with football otherwise to referee & do it right. Can't keep up with the kids at basketball on 2...

This is where judgement come in.

Is the problem serious enough to cause a safety or legal problem? If yes, then you have a moral obligation to take action.

If not, is it an isolated incident? We all have bad days, and if that's...

Timing

Agreed, timing can be a factor in many situations without 2 out.

I was merely repeating what is in the NCAA manual, and describing the typical use of the signal (2 out) as I have seen it employed...

Lightbulb IF & Timing signals

The mechanic of pointing to the upper left chest with just the index finger when you have an infield fly with one out is an alternative I've seen taught to the NFHS & NCAA mechanic where the IF...

More whiskey?

Given that your "5 or 6 worst incidents ... all had alcohol at the root of the problem", more whiskey may not be a good idea!

Exclamation No gear?!

I've read this thread, and others in the past on the same subject. I am TOTALLY befuddled by this.

In this area, working High School / 18U & down, I have only ever seen 1 ump without gear behind...

Thumbs up arbiter

Our NFHS group used it this spring for the first time. Once the first time glitches were worked out, it was a quantum leap ahead. Local basketball group used is with good results too.

I've never seen or heard of a 16" softball here in the NW

But I'd love to know where to get one. Would be fun to sneak one in in my ball bag, and toss it out to the pitcher after a foul out of play, and watch the reaction.

Are they optic yellow or white?

By that, I don't mean letting them talk you into the call, but watch & continue to watch their actions for clues to confirm/support your observations.

If they are immediately looking at you with...

Thumbs up Documentation is a good thing.

Scenario 1. UIC, who is backing me up, uses the printed rule book as a tool/reference to support his case, and to convince a coach who won't believe anything less. But now he is quiet, and even goes...

No, but not no catch!

Given that close games between better teams often are soo loud (at least around here) that it can be hard for anything to be heard, "No Catch" can too easily be heard as just "Catch".

Just like...

And, as strange as it seemed to the Illinois & Ohio St. poster to root for Michigan, how about someone from Pac-10 country rooting for a Big-10 team against a Pac-10 team?

The answer is when a...

as WestMichighan notes

Tests are not rules. Unfortunately, while we are SUPPOSED to know the rules, we are REQUIRED to pass the test, whether we know how to implement them or not.
