The question is however: why was the timer tossed?

How can a member of the table crew toss an official for interfering with table operations?

I would never toss an official, however I might see about talking with the partner after the game about the situation & have a civil discussion about what I observed compared to what they observed.

Where the hell would you ever get the idea that a timer has power to do any more than keep time?

I have stated this in other postings, that I've been told before by officials that I've worked with that the table crew is an extension of the officiating crew.

The primary duty of the timer is to keep track of the time, yes, however there can be more to those duties depending on the game management & instructions given.

While you're an extension of the crew, you are not officials and you do not have the same authority officials have. An assistant coach is an extension of the coaching staff, but he does not have the same priveleges as the HC.

And if a timer ever approached me to discuss my partner's behavior or calls, I'd have a talk with the AD from that school the next morning.

For me it would be casual questioning, just to have a clearer understanding of what could/should be done differently from my POV, as well as the official's POV.

I never said have the same authority as the officials, those times I have mentioned something to the officials about something I have observed, I leave the final decision to them on how to act on what I'm talking about.

Like, "Hey, bring me a water little fella." Or more appropriately, "You are to bring me a water at each quarter break, those are your instructions."

Nobody is indespensible, well almost nobody. No scorer? No problem, just bring down someone's Mom who knows the game outa the stands, show her what the buttons do, and we'll get by. No coach? Not a problem, The AD can fill in, or the Principle, play ball. No players? That could be a limiting factor. No game officials? One shows up, lets play. None at all, we got a liability problem, game canceled.
