Loudest partner yet

Last night 8th grade boys rec game - first time in about two years with this partner. I'd forgotten his "style". The best way to describe it is "overly demonstrative". He yelled each call at the top of his lungs. He was incredibly dramatic in his mechanics. When he called a block, he did that thing where you hop on one foot toward the table while hitting your hips with your fists three or four times and yelling "BLOCK". I'm sure they could hear his calls in the next gym.

At least I never had a problem with him communicating his calls. Everyone in that zip code knew what they were.

Oh yeah - just to top it off - he tossed the clock keeper out of the gym. At halftime, I asked him why and he just said, "The guy pi$$ed me off." Ooooohhhhh kaaaaay.

BTW - he actually calls a good game.

Wow. I can't even imagine a clock keeper being so annoying that you would......

Wait. Yes, I can.

We have a Rec League with a Ref who used to be like this......

One of my first lessons as a new official was the ole - "Remember, no one is here to see you ref the game" speech. For this new official, it was all about him. Loud, talking it up, made up signals, watch me, etc. Never had any formal training per se, but he gave it a shot and helped where he could.

I remember one game that was getting a little out of hand IMO (I was just watching) and he stopped the game got the ten on the floor to the center circle and gave everyone in the gym a speech about, "This isn't Duke vs North Carolina," etc. So all the boys and parents could here it. Folks were looking at me as if to say? I couldn't crawl under my chair, but wished I could have.

He turned out be a pretty good guy, still loud though, wow! I saw him on the court a few weekends ago and he's really toned it down and does much better now. Experience helps.

If I were the timer I would have tossed your partner for interfering with table operations.

The timer probably wasn't listening to his instructions or was making comments out loud that had a negative impact on the game.

Technically, it would depend on what was done or said wouldn't it?

Also, from a game management's POV is that person scheduled to do other games that night?

If that's the case, depending on the severity of what happened, the game management would then have to find other personnel to fill in for the other scheduled game(s).

The question is however: why was the timer tossed?

How can a member of the table crew toss an official for interfering with table operations?

I would never toss an official, however I might see about talking with the partner after the game about the situation & have a civil discussion about what I observed compared to what they observed.

Where the hell would you ever get the idea that a timer has power to do any more than keep time?

I have stated this in other postings, that I've been told before by officials that I've worked with that the table crew is an extension of the officiating crew.

The primary duty of the timer is to keep track of the time, yes, however there can be more to those duties depending on the game management & instructions given.

While you're an extension of the crew, you are not officials and you do not have the same authority officials have. An assistant coach is an extension of the coaching staff, but he does not have the same priveleges as the HC.

And if a timer ever approached me to discuss my partner's behavior or calls, I'd have a talk with the AD from that school the next morning.
