Holding enforcement spot

NFHS

1st and 10 from A's30. Running play gains 5 yards, B45 is flagged for holding at A'35 yardline. If accepted wher is enforcement spot, end of run or previous spot.

TIA

End of the related run.

This is just all but one enforcement. Live ball fouls are enforced from the basic spot. In this instance, the basic spot is the end of the run.

Hold on there. B is flagged for holding ... not A. A can decline the penalty and have 2nd & 5 from their 35 or they (obviously the choice here) can have it 1st & 10 from their 40. 10 yard penalty would be marked off from the previous spot and, by rule, this is a first down (10 yd. penalty on B on 1st & 10) by rule. (Not auto.)

Welpe was right. All fouls are enforced from the basic spot except foul by the offense behind the basic spot (all but one). This was a running play and the basic spot on a running play is the end of the related run. This foul is enforced from the A35 regardless of where the hold took place. 1st and 10 for A at the A45.

To clarify I meant to say:

Live ball fouls by the defense are enforced from the basic spot.

End of the run = running play. Previous spot = loose ball play.

Exactly. So the foul is marked off from the end of the run.

Just FYI, it would be enforced from the EOR under NCAA rules also.

I would have a difficult time with a defensive hold that occurred 5 yards beyond the LOS. Defensive holds are usually on play at the LOS when a defensive lineman holds an offensive lineman who is doing a scrape block and trying to get to the linebacker for that 2nd block. Can you think of a reason for a defensive hold 5 yards beyond the LOS? I think I would be having a discussion with the calling official to see what exactly happened.

Here's a simple way: It was intended as a pass play, but developed into a run when the receiver who was held appeared to be covered.
