I think the Sioux nickname is history. The Spirit Lake Sioux voted in favor of the name but the necessity of getting the issue settled before being officially considered by the Summitt League put pressure on the Bd of Higher Ed. The Standing Rock Sioux have not voted yet and in either case, sometime down the road they could vote against the name and UND would be screwed. I think UND will go without a name for a few years to let the dust settle. The Summitt would be a great fit for UND, NDSU, SDSU and USD. I predicted a few years ago that someday there would be a league of D-I schools that looked a lot like the NCC.
You might be interested in the fact that the ND Board of Higher Ed voted 8-0 to get rid of the Sioux logo/nickname. Starting Oct. 1 UND has to begin the process and get it done by Aug. of 2010.
