That is to establish legal guarding position. A defender with his back to the player he intends on guarding cannot establish LGP.

1)Rule 4-1-1 -- "An airborne shooter is a player who...has tapped the ball and has not returned to the floor".
2)Rule 4-19-6 -- "A player-control foul is a common foul committed...by an airborne shooter".
