Life has changed CC. You may not be on ESPN but parents with video cams are there. Aunts and uncles with video phones are there. The local sports reporter for Action News has someone there to send them highlights. Blow it and you'll be confronted during or after the game, might see yourself on the local news, and will show up on youtube. If you've been following the forums you'll have seen some of them.

But hey - whatever floats your boat . . . . .

We should not be officiating to satisfy Autie Rae or Uncle Lou's video camera. We should be officiating the game and only the game. If F4 or F6 slides his foot past 2nd base while in full control of the ball, I am calling the out and I don't care about the cameras. I call it the same for both sides, game for game - tough s**t if the cameras don't like it!

Yes, but you won't call it if you see the foot 2 feet off the bag ... like they used to.

First of all Ozzy, Happy Holidays. I would wish you a Merry Christmas but my 11 year old just came home from school today with a note admonishing her for writing those words on her art class project. We certainly live in a changed world! That seems like as good a segue as any.

I know what you are saying and respect it. I don't officiate for the cameras or an 'attaboy' from a fan/player/coach. As you stated, I officiate the game and only the game. I call what I see, not what should have happened. I used to make the expected call and didn't care who thought differently. Like the note from school, times have changed for many of us.

I wish you well through the next official, non-sectarian celebratory period we used to call Christmastime.

FWIW, I love my Kindle and have the new Fire arriving under the Christmas tree (thanks, dear!). While writing notes in the margin and the tactile reward of a book is nice, I hope Carl considers making an eBook edition. Last season, I had my Kindle with me for rain delays, long waits for buses that were late and the times I arrived earlier than I should have. It beats reading about my Cubs losing the day before.

As I understand it, that's up to Amazon. I asked then to do it.

Concerning the other comments about the "phantom double play": As you know, I'm still working. It's true I don't call NCAA D1 anymore, and I don't call 14u or below except when I'm evaluating an umpire. But from 15 through MSBL, I still work regularly. I was picked again last year for the high school state tournament playoffs.

Perhaps it's different in our part of the country, but down here, "if he would have been out, he is out."

Of course, you need to read all the entries about phantom calls to get the full dose.

At my house it's both Christmas and Hanukkah.

For some it's Kwanzaa.

For others it's just another day.

Please try to comprehend that not all people/families are alike.

It doesn't have anything to do with "comprehending that all people/families are not alike".

It has everything to with admonishing a child for daring to express an innocent holiday greeting that is obviously part of her belief and value system.

Admonishing anyone for expressing a holiday greeting for the holiday of their choice is knee-jerk political correctness at it's worst- be it Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or Festivus.

If someone is truly hurt or offended by a kid writing the words "Merry Christmas", then it sounds like they have a problem comprehending that "everyone is not alike".
