This is the PUs call, and the BU needs to stay away from it.
The O manager needs to protest this call to get the BU involved. That's when all the umpires get together, and come up with a ruling. Now unless the BU was the UIC for this game, it sounds like you'd come up with the same, stupid, ruling. I don't know the affiliation of this game to figure out if there was a higher source for this protest to go to. OP, you need to print out this thread, and show it to your PU. This was nothing but a foul ball, and he SHOULD know this. |

Fair/foul is the PU's call. Why is an out for IFF PU's call?

Because the pesky rulebook says so.

OK guys, I now understand what I need to do in the future. I will call time
and let my partner know what I saw and also tell them that the ruling was wrong, and if they want to change it fine and if not fine also. Its not a judgement call so an attempt to make it right is expected of me, but I must make sure I never show my partner up even if he is butt head. Thanks for all the input and the different opinions. |

Fixing the misapplied RULE, however, is either umpire's duty.

Let the manager do "his" job and protest the call (if the league has protest procedures in place) If they do not, have a post game in the parking lot. if this "clown" doesn't KNOW the IFR then make certain you do not work with him again as there are other rules which are way more complicated then the IFR. In a nutshell you DO NOT get into an argument with your partner on the field. Pete Booth

The fact that he made an IFF call is neither here nor there. The fact that he called an out for IFF on a foul ball is the problem, and I agree with your last statement. This needs to be fixed.

I wasn't clear, sorry.
Of course, either umpire can call the IFF. But once the PU called the IFF, then called it foul, and banged the BR out, he owns this call. Moving in from the BU position, to talk about the call goes against protocol. I guess it comes down to when is a partner coming to help, when is he waiting to be asked for help, and when do you expect the manager come out and either request the original umpire get assistance, or protest. Me, I want the manager to do HIS job in this squaredance. |
