Infield Fly

I am BU, bases loaded, no outs, batter pops one high around home area, I point up to let my partner know, he says " Infield fly batter out" the ball drops and hits the foul line, chalk puffs (20' up the line) then rolls foul and stops at the fence. Pitcher picks up ball, PU says batter is still out. Off.players, mgr, coaches,
fans go crazy.Game continues. I remember reading that it should be called
"Infield Fly,If Fair" In what I described above, wouldn't this be a foul ball and
not batter out? I talked after the game with my partner and he told me
to read the book, and once i have been doing this as long as him I may then
understand it all. Whats the right call? Nobody touched the ball until the
Pitcher picked it up. 13&14 boys

thristycamel,

As described, it was a foul ball.

Your partner is a moron.

You my friend are correct. "Infield Fly, If Fair". Once you have been doing it as long as him, You might have read the rule book once or twice and understand the rules.

As the BU should I have said anything to make this call correct?

Maybe. Depends on the situation. That is a misinterpretation of a rule.

txump81 Thu Jun 17, 2010 05:48am

The game could have been protested due to misapplication of rules. This one play probably wouldn't change the outcome, however, it is easier to correct the ruling at the time.

About all you could do is call TIME and pull your partner aside and ask him about it. By his reaction in post-game, it sounds like it wouldn't have done any good. Whatever you do, don't overrule him. After the discussion, it is his decision whether or not to correct the call or not.

NEVER overrule your partner. EVER.

Call time and discuss, then let them change their call if they decide that is what they are going to do.

You're not overruling your partner. He agrees that this is a foul ball. He's got the rule wrong - this should not be an out. If you don't correct him he's not wrong, you're both wrong.

This is the PUs call, and the BU needs to stay away from it.

The O manager needs to protest this call to get the BU involved. That's when all the umpires get together, and come up with a ruling. Now unless the BU was the UIC for this game, it sounds like you'd come up with the same, stupid, ruling. I don't know the affiliation of this game to figure out if there was a higher source for this protest to go to.

OP, you need to print out this thread, and show it to your PU. This was nothing but a foul ball, and he SHOULD know this.

tibear Thu Jun 17, 2010 10:45am

Not sure, if the O manager needs to ask the PU to ask for help. If the BU thinks there is a misapplication of a rule, shouldn't he call time and discuss with his partner.

Fair/foul is the PU's call. Why is an out for IFF PU's call?
