Both Manny and MD make good points.

MD, I agree we need evidence they are making that appeal. I think the throw is that which is why I said that you wouldn't need to appeal the throw back to first. I suppose I was thinking more of a verbal as opposed to an "action" appeal.

I think on further reflection I take Manny's point as well. I was not intending to muddy the waters by bringing appeals into the situation really. My intent with my statement that she could have stood on the base was not to imply an appeal but to demonstrate how close the ball fell to the base itself and why forcing the runner to abandon the base would not be fair to the offense.

I mentioned ASA because this was at the end of the post.

The wording I was looking for in ASA is under rule supplement 33 part C. Last 2 sentences, "The rule provides the runner must vacate any space needed by a fielder to make a play on a batted ball, unless the runner has contact with a legally occupied base when the hinderance occurs. In this case, the runner should not be called out unless the hinderance is intentional."

I seem to remember at some point seeing this question on either the FED exam or in one of the publications and the ruling in FED is the same. Unless the runner does something intentional to interfere, they do not have to leave the base for the fielder to make a play.
