Yeah I think that's CecilOne's point... the batter is out as soon as it's hit, but according to our mechanics, it's not declared until the proper time.

fortunately, it wasnt a tanked judgement call that we all beat ourselves up over, but merely a rules-interp situation that's easily fixed with no sour grapes on either side.

I really wish I...

the pitch was wide, pulling the batter and the catcher to the right. Both of their momentums (momenta?) kept them in the same alignment to 3B.

Okay.

Thanks all for the clarification. The final answer to my OP is, "because it's the rule."

It seems to me, the point of killing it at the time the OBS runner is put out, is to let the dust...

Delayed Dead Ball

2 outs. R1 from 3B is obstructed coming home and is put out at HP. "Dead ball, obstruction, runner is protected to the plate." However, R2 from 1B is continuing on around 2nd into 3B. Overthrow at...

And my take is, I dont feel the ball at the shoulder is to threaten, it's more to communicate "If you take off, I'm ready for you". That's not a play.
Unless she cranks back to throw, the onus is on...

Look back rule

In the past I've read differing opinions of what constitutes "making a play" in regards to a pitcher merely holding the ball at shoulder height.

Play: R1 is 3-4 steps off 3B as (walked) BR trots...

I hope this pertains strictly to FED ball, because NCAA states flat out that if she contacts a fair batted ball with a foot still in the box, it's a foul ball.

I understand your point. However, in retrospect (my retrospect occurring as my hands were displaying the "SAFE" call), F3 had control of the ball before the runner reached the bag.

The case play...

Nope, it's not the force of the tag that cause the ball to come out (it's not a tag play), in the OP it's the impact of the glove hitting the ground after the out was made on the force play.

On a...

Your scenario reminds me of the bases-loaded, 2-out bunt that settles to a stop on the plate. F2 picks up the ball. Is R1 on 3B called out in the infinitesimal moment of picking the ball up (when it...

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Based my thoughts on the play where F6 catches the throw at 2B for a force out, a split-second later gets bumped by the runner coming into 2B and dislodges the ball....

So, in his case...
