You are quite right. Thanks for the correction. It does matter if A had put the ball in play on the A40 rather than the B40. Brain freeze!

It matters not whether A started from the B40 or the A40. It was a fourth down play. The penalty carries a loss of down. B is going to get the ball irrespective of A's line to gain.

Look again at my post. This was a fourth down play. The penalty for an illegal pass beyond the LOS is 5 yards and loss of down. This means B will have first and 10 on B's 23 after the fouls are...

A is guilty of illegal forward pass at B33. Cancel score, penalize 5 yards to B38 plus loss of down. Ball goes over to B since this was a fourth down play. Penalize B 15 yards from the B38 for the...

You are right about that. In NFL there are almost as many exceptions in as there are rules. Rut was almost right when he said fouls behind the line are administered from the previous spot. Most are,...

Excellent post. Our association would use the same lineup should the occasion arise. Your rationale for this line-up makes sense. An earlier post cited the 2004-05 Manual when he stated the correct...

Now that I have been publicly flogged and tongue-lashed, I apologize for the "tone" of my post and herewith retract it. I certainly don't want to be "the problem". Open discussion of subjects is...

I don't quite get your response to the question regarding a player catching a kick on the 4 yard line and carrying it into the end zone. You said the ball is dead when it crosses the goal line and...

There is no way you can respond to Coach B with an answer that he would be happy with. I would, however, avoid being in that situation by letting the clock run out knowing Team A could not legally...

Re: How would that work..?

I'll respond to PiggSkin's question regarding NFL rules in the above situations. A backward pass going out of bounds during the last two minutes of either half stops the clock, however, the clock is...

And Team A throws a backward pass at B's 2 yard line which is muffed into the end zone and out of bounds or is recovered by B in the end zone and the play is blown dead. This too, is a touchback.

I agree with Bob M. this is a PSK situation under NF rules. K is not in possession at the end of the down. When K fell on the ball at the twelve yard line this was the second illegal touch, the first...

Re: What if A) were different?

R's muff has no significance since it is behind the line. K may legally recover the kick behind the line and advance, but since he did not make the line to gain,30 yard line, R would take over on the...

A's try is unsuccessful. The try ends when B secures possession. No points are scored. B cannot score on a try. (Oregon may disagree, however)

Hold on Jim S. I wish you had a bet with me. 7.2.5 has nothing to do with the play in question and is not the only place in the rule book where it defines where B can be. For starters, checkRule 2.8,...
