An indirect occurs and is charged to the coach when a technical foul called against someone else other than a player (the 5 legally in the game). We never "call" the indirect itself. It is only the way the foul penalty is administered.

While a nice way for you to think about it, the phrasing isn't precisely true.

There are substitute technicals, administrative technicals, and even the crowd could cause a team technical. None of these get charged indirectly to the head coach.
