At camp (a pretty good camp emphasizing pure Fed mechanics) we've been taught, for instance, the "5-4-2" on a violation. 5 fingers (the open hand) accompanying the whistle to stop the clock, 4 fingers to indicate direction of the subsequent throw-in, 2 fingers to designate spot of the throw in.
What was he signalling with one finger?

That's what I was taught the FED mechanics are. NCAA is 5-2-1.

I have no preference as to what you do in SW Michigan. Nor, to be honest, do I factor this into any ratings of fellow officials in IL. I might mention it during observations of newer officials (but usually there are more important things to mention).

I'll revisit photo and possibly she is pointing to spot. My point is more the choice of the photo with an incorrect mechanic when the fed is a stickler on these things.

Never heard the 5-4-2 reference. Like it.
