Ah...the valuable little things discovered via this discussion board!
Sure enough, the mechanics pic in the NFHS Officials' Manual shows the faceless guy using one finger to point to the "designated spot".
Thank you for the above response which prompted me to check it out.
Three or four games from now, giving the finger will become automatic, kinda like "calling official stays tableside on shooting fouls". That's become automatic already.
Oh, the faceless guy seems to use five fingers for direction.
Maybe "When in Nome, do as the Nomans do", if one's supervisor is insistent on this?
