Picky, picky
Cover of Officials Quarterly from NFHS and ref is pointing with two fingers. I've been told at camps that's fine for the college guys but you're during high school. I would have thought that the fed publication would be a stickler on this especially for a cover shot.
That said, I do the same thing on occasion but am trying to break the habit. |
The Finger
Can you refresh us on what the cover showed him signalling? What was the sitch?
At camp (a pretty good camp emphasizing pure Fed mechanics) we've been taught, for instance, the "5-4-2" on a violation. 5 fingers (the open hand) accompanying the whistle to stop the clock, 4 fingers to indicate direction of the subsequent throw-in, 2 fingers to designate spot of the throw in. What was he signalling with one finger? |

Those are college refs saying that. ;) |

I use one finger to signal direction and designate the spot for a throw in. |
Giving the Finger
Ah...the valuable little things discovered via this discussion board!
Sure enough, the mechanics pic in the NFHS Officials' Manual shows the faceless guy using one finger to point to the "designated spot". Thank you for the above response which prompted me to check it out. Three or four games from now, giving the finger will become automatic, kinda like "calling official stays tableside on shooting fouls". That's become automatic already. Oh, the faceless guy seems to use five fingers for direction. Maybe "When in Nome, do as the Nomans do", if one's supervisor is insistent on this? |

Never Argue with Bob
Bob, so are you saying you'd prefer I stay with the "5-4-2" for Fed?

Well, at least the title of the thread is correct

I'll revisit photo and possibly she is pointing to spot. My point is more the choice of the photo with an incorrect mechanic when the fed is a stickler on these things. Never heard the 5-4-2 reference. Like it. |
