Our state association sets the pay for 2 & 3 man crews, but does not demand either. The schools in our local association are split about 50/50 on 2 & 3 man, with the more serious BBall schools(summer camps, out of state tournaments,etc.. using 3). I talk to alot of coaches who also feel that they sometimes get 2 veterans, and a rookie when they have 3, but they also have to understand that the rookies have to work or that in years to come, they won't have any officials. Our association is about 8 short, or we would work 3 every night, but as it is we allow the schools to tell us what they want. It helps that our state uses 3 in all tournament games, so the coaches know they better be ready for 3 when the tournaments roll around.
TO:KDM, The JACKSON,TN association uses 3 in every game also.

To KDM,
Please don't take it personally. I'm certainly not beating up on officials.

Thom,

I didn't take it personally, just thought I would offer a 'parody' to your response!

Thumbs up

Three man mechanices at the varsity level should be the focus of every association in the country. In Alabama, where I was exposed to three-man mechanics, the state is working deligently in recruiting, training, and using proper mechanics. On average, there are 9-10 high school camps during the summer, allowing officials to learn how to officiate with a 3 man crew.

To offset the cost of a 3 man crew, varsity games are scheduled on Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday nights. The girls play first at 6:00 pm, followed by the boys at 7:30 pm. Game fee is $65 per official for both games. Compare that to $40 per official for 2 man per game for 2 games. The school is only paying an additional $15 or $7.50 per game more for the extra official. This was more appealing to the schools to use 3 man mechanics.

In addition to using it during the year, officials were better prepared to call regional, and state games at the end of the season.

The bottom line is to prepare officials to use the proper mechanics of 3 man crews to call a better game.

Our association assigns two man crews due in large part to cost and the lack of officials needed for our area. With over 80 high schools in our association, three man crews would be cost prohibitive and would spread us too thin in providing quality officials for the smaller schools (which in many cases play just as good a brand of basketball as do the larger schools.)

More new math.

Old: $40 / per official per game = $40 x 4 = $160

New: $65 per official / per two games = $65 x 3 = $195.

Difference = $35.

That said, I agree with your conclusion. I'd just be careful about how it's explained because someone is sure to not listen to your argument if your math is incorrect.

Also, do you find that soem officials are objecting to working two games? Do younger officials view this as an opportunity or a set back (3 officials needed to cover the two games versus 4 under the old system)? Do "boys" officials object to working "girls" games (and vice-versa)? Does this affect the recruitment of female officials?

We use 3 person in all state tournamant games. We have 3 conferences (of about 12-15) in the area that use 3 person in all conference games. The other conferences only use 3 person in "big games".

I have heard the lack of officials in number and cost are the big resistence factors.

Cost is not that much. Each teams plays about 10 home games a year (excluding thanksgiving and December holiday tournamants). So 10 boys + 10 girls = 20 varsity games at $46 per official = $ 920.00 a year.

In addition, the refs make $46 a game, the official scorers make $ 90- $100 for a prelim/varsity double or $45-50 a game. Same fee, no uniform, no training, no license, no insurance, no physical (and mental) involvement.

Most of the leagues in our area (southwestern Ohio) are 3-man. Even freshman and JV games in the Dayton City League are 3 as well as several girls leagues. One AD in a league that just converted this year was opposed because he felt 3-man caused older officials to hang on too long. He was wanting younger officials in the league. I feel 3-man does that by giving more people an opportunity to work. I personally have not worked a 2-man game in 2 years and don't plan on doing another. We do not have a shortage of officials, but there are games in which the rotation mechanics are not worked as smoothly as they should be. I think this will work itself out as more officials dedicate themselves to learning proper 3-man machanics and working on them in the summer.
