Three man mechanices at the varsity level should be the focus of every association in the country. In Alabama, where I was exposed to three-man mechanics, the state is working deligently in recruiting, training, and using proper mechanics. On average, there are 9-10 high school camps during the summer, allowing officials to learn how to officiate with a 3 man crew.
To offset the cost of a 3 man crew, varsity games are scheduled on Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday nights. The girls play first at 6:00 pm, followed by the boys at 7:30 pm. Game fee is $65 per official for both games. Compare that to $40 per official for 2 man per game for 2 games. The school is only paying an additional $15 or $7.50 per game more for the extra official. This was more appealing to the schools to use 3 man mechanics.
In addition to using it during the year, officials were better prepared to call regional, and state games at the end of the season.
The bottom line is to prepare officials to use the proper mechanics of 3 man crews to call a better game.
