Can players wear jewelry if it's completely taped and not visible?
ie watch, bracelets.

HS and NCAA women - by the book - no.
The ref however cannot legally ask for the tape to be taken off to inspect.
As far as I’m concerned - for HS it’s enough for the coach to confirm that the players are compliant with the jewelry rule. NCAA - I don’t ask.

Studs and posts (and in NCAAW, snug cuffs) can be worn above the chin. No hoops, dangles, bars and nothing below the chin. No jewelry can be taped over and the tape (and jewelry below the chin) should be removed.

Note that medical alert medallions and religious medals are not jewelry and have separate rules.

Loops are allowed in NCAA, provided they are tight, which by itself is a lose (pun intended) definition, so the clarification was it should touch skin all around. “Bars”? Isn’t that what “studs” and “posts” are?
Then in the last bulletin Ryan MacDowell asked that we take it easy and only interfere if something is in our face.

How do you go about enforcing the “should be removed” part on suspected taped over jewelry?

"Just a reminder, if you're taping over something illegal, that's not allowed." Then leave it at that, and if you see it later, we're pulling out a card. And not a delay.

So we will actually let them play with the taped over jewelry.

That’s my point - to enforce the rule, one has to actually see the jewelry underneath it. Which can only happen if the player happens to take off the tape in front of the ref (and the ref notices).
Rules without ways of enforcement are useless imo.

"Legally"? Why not? NCAA specifies that tape can't be worn.

It can't be worn to cover something illegal. Certainly tape can be worn, and is all the time. Check wrists, fingers, etc...

Of course. I hope it was clear that this is what I meant. But since tape is never used to provide support to an ear, an eyebrow, or a nostril, I don't think it's too unreasonable to ask a player to show me what it's covering.

My post was intended to dispute the idea that officials aren't allowed ("legally") to ask.

You can ask what’s under the tape. They might or might not be honest about it. Or might refuse to answer at all.

You cannot insist that they take the tape off so you can check out for yourself.
