How do you guys see this play?
I'll try my best to describe this in a way to NOT make this a HTBT (even though it is) sitch so I can get wide range of opinions.
ASA Adult Coed SP (Local rec league) No outs. No runners on base. B1 hits a shot into the gap in right center. He's it legging into third, does not slide, and in trying to stop on the bag (just as the throw is coming into by F5...who is in a perfectly legal fielding position) overruns the bag thru the coaches box and toward the fence. The throw goes past F5 and rolls toward the fence near where BR has ended up. F5 runs to pickup ball as BR is reversing direction and running back to 3rd. So now here's what I'm looking at (and everything happened fast): >3rd base coach has basically not moved at all and is standing in the (unmarked) coaches box >BR scoots around 3rd base coach's right as he heads back to 3rd >F5 who is chasing BR bumps into 3rd base coach, but still manages to tag out BR before he gets back to the bag. Here's the question...IF F5 had failed to get a tag on BR for the out...what would you have??? 1) Interference on 3rd base coach? 2) Nothing...as coach was OK by just staying where he was. IMHO...interference on coach as he has to recognize that we have a ball in play AND a play being made on a runner right in the area where he is standing. Thoughts? Opinions? I'm open to being swayed as I'm not 100% convienced that I'm right in my interp. Strange play to be sure, but hey that's rec league adult coed...expect the unexpected and the bizzare. |

If a coach is anywhere in live ball territory, they must not interfere with the defense's ability to make an out, even if they are in the coach's box.
If F5 was hindered by the bump with the coach, AND F5 had an opportunity to make an out, I'd have INT and an out. If there was no chance in hell that F5 could've made a play, then I've got nothing. The key to this is recognizing the fact that the coach's box is not a sanctuary. They MUST still get out of the way of the defense, or they will risk getting an INT call. If F5 had an opportunity to make a play on the runner, you would have made the right call if you called INT.

Dave I haven't decided if I should call it from the dugout or the outfield. Apparently, both have really great views! Screw green, it ain't easy being blue! I won't be coming here that much anymore. I might check in now and again. |

Absolutely correct. Good pickup.

Doesn't matter, I think all rules in all organizations agree.
I agree with you and the others.

Quickee Mens FP question
Mens FP is irrelevant... but
Scenario 1...Past ball bounces off hard backstop & hits batter. Obviously not a HBP, but dead ball? Scenario 2... what if it was a 3rd strike? Interference with an U3K? Ball never hit the ground before hitting the batter (also not relevant, just illustrating the speed of the pitch) Scenario 1 is what happened... I didn't kill it. |

Seriously...in your OP, I would have INT and an out on the runner. Being it coed wreck, I'd probably give a nice reminder to the 3rd base coach after making the INT out call. Sometimes those fidiots don't realize why you made the call until you tell them. Utrip would have the same ruling as ASA. |
