BTW - By the way.

I read your post, and I understood the context and thought it was funny. Hopefully many others did also. Unfortunately, on person did not.

Quick Question...did you call time because you saw that the runner on third WASNT coming home, and it wasnt a planned play? Calling time on a 3ball count is a fast way to get into a lot of hot water.......as for how to stay out of that situation....we emphasize being VERY careful about ringing right handed ball players up from the C position. Its kinda hard to justify NOT asking if you are the plate ump....

I know we are already discussing alot in pre-game, but this situation could be something to bring up. A simple agreement with the base ump to rule no swing in this situation allows you to appeal the swing and stay with a ball call. Everybody is happy. The defense got their appeal the runner was put in jeopardy and nobody is the wiser.

BTW = by the way
I reread your post a couple of times and figured out that you must know those folks & were giving them a hard time. Maybe I didn't read it the way it was meant to sound the first time - sounds like that's what Elaine did.

She's all right. And from some of her past self-descriptions, I think she may have pulled out the "family" album & is showing them on some recent posts.

As for checking with a partner who's in C, why not. I'll tell partners that I will go to them just about everytime a catchers asks and they're to give me whatever they have. But with 2 strikes, I'm telling catcher's - no, I'm not checking on that one.

Hmmmmmm, has it occured to anyone that the batter reached 1st during a live ball dropped 3rd strike and only left the bag AFTER time had been called? Seems to me that by appealing the coach just gave the batter 1st.

Look at it this way. Batter checks swing but thinks a strike is going to be called and heads to 1st because of the dropped ball. Do you tell her that she can't take off for 1st untill you call strike 3? Of course not she's heads up. Why would you in this case take her off 1st after the appeal?

I say give her 1st and next time the coach will not make the same mistake.

I know this kind of stuff goes on, complete with secret signals from the PU as to whether the appeal is "real" or not - the "I'm making the appeal, pard, but you need to back my call" signal.

I don't agree with this. If this is brought up at pre-game, I tell my partner that if he asks, I'm going with what I saw, and if I'm at the plate and I ask him, I want what he saw. No "none-the-wiser" stuff.

I once worked a baseball game with an "old-timer." His secret signal was this:

"If I ask you 'did he swing?' give me what you see"

"If I as you by name, 'Dave, did he swing' you give me what I say"

Question

My question is, if you thought it was appealable after you killed the play. Why not before you killed it?
