I know this kind of stuff goes on, complete with secret signals from the PU as to whether the appeal is "real" or not - the "I'm making the appeal, pard, but you need to back my call" signal.

I don't agree with this. If this is brought up at pre-game, I tell my partner that if he asks, I'm going with what I saw, and if I'm at the plate and I ask him, I want what he saw. No "none-the-wiser" stuff.
I once worked a baseball game with an "old-timer." His secret signal was this:

"If I ask you 'did he swing?' give me what you see"

"If I as you by name, 'Dave, did he swing' you give me what I say"
