Adam, I believe the correct term would be to throw the ball at the wrong basket. I don't believe you can shoot at the wrong basket. We are all clear on what your saying, but it does make a difference

The Blue team steals the ball races up to their correct hoop where we have a White foul on the shot. The white coach is telling me that I have to correct this. I tell him it is not correctable and things have to stand as they are with Blue shot at Whites basket counting for White and the suspequent foul at the other end standing.
Should we have blown the whistle after Blue shooting at the wrong hoop and White passing in?
Happened to me more that 10 years ago in highly contested rival boys varsity. If you search, you could find it. Also happened last year in 2014 FIBA U17 Women's world championship Slovakia v. Mexico. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8TbIGH_x-Uk
I was trail and was looking at table after they scored in wrong basket trying to communicate that the 2 pts. went to home team. While I was doing that, home team inbounded to apparently the only player on court that knew what was going on and he scored again and then quarter ended. Both coaches came out with V saying you got to correct it and H saying you can't take it away. Well we discussed it and counted all 4 pts and just played on as we couldn't come up with a solution. Well State rules interpreter got involved and they came up with the same as the current casebook interp (not sure if it existed back then). First, without a doubt, it was confusion and no attempt to deceive. What we should have done is when V scored in the wrong basket and H went to take the ball OOB, that's when you should kill it. I've come up to my own conclusion that even if no one immediately goes to take ball OOB, I'm going to kill it immediately, go the table to ensure the points are recorded for the correct team, and then get the ball inbounded by correct team with the right to run the endline as after any H team score. If you watch the you tube video, it appears no one even noticed. I sent that to my partner in that game last summer. We both had a good laugh and felt better. As someone else said, it's easy to second guess but much harder real time. I'll attest to that! The only reason I'll never make that mistake is because I already did it once! We are what our experience makes us. The more plays we see, the more prepared we are for all the weird stuff. Don't sweat it but have a plan for when it happens again because if you stay in this biz long enough, it will.

I don't understand how any official can ever let the wrong team execute a throw-in.

Since "shot" or "shoot" aren't really defined in the rules, I don't think it matters.

I'll have to double check, but I was thinking the rules clearly define "try" but not "shot." I suppose "shooting motion" could be applied, though.

Well-stated and well-observed; whenever this occurs (at it happens about twice per season), I always just pop my whistle, stop clock, and over-see the sorting out process--it's just too much confusion going, furthermore if not decisively corrected it just morphs into a larger problem. Manage that game Ref!
