What a nightmare from the officials perspective. Just goes to show that you should really know the rule book when it comes to enforcing penalties.

God help us officials if the court room is used as a final arbiter of sports contests. How long before an overzealous parent thinks his son/daughter was irreparably harmed by that 4th unsportsmanlike technical foul during a season...obviously why (s)he didn't get an offer from Duke?

The court will almost certainly end up dismissing this case, and rightfully so because sport arbitration should not be in the jurisdiction of the judicial system. Still, OSSAA really ought to have a mechanism in place to remedy situations like this where a clear misapplication of the rules significantly alters a game, especially in a high-stakes situation like a state quarterfinal.

The video doesn't get into it, but if you read the article the penalty in question was because a coach on the losing team bumped an official (assuming inadvertantly) as he was running down the sideline in his excitement because his team was in the process of scoring the go ahead touchdown. Instead of enforcing the penalty on the kickoff, the crew incorrectly nullified the touchdown. With a minute to go. Yikes.

They do. It is called referees on the field. They get a chance after every play where a penalty flag is thrown to discuss the enforcement. If they still get it wrong, too bad, it is done. Most sports would become a nightmare if they permitted post event review of decisions in a way that could change the outcome of the game. There are so many judgement calls throughout basketball and football, there really is no sense in letting the review of one play change the result.

At what point in the playoff schedule should a State Rep be on site to handle "appeals"?

(Similar to a UIC at a Tournament).

What's more, the coach could have requested a conference with the referee to challenge the ruling when it was made but of course didn't because he didn't know the rule either.

Not to mention that he was apparently too busy arguing about the flag being thrown at all.

Court has ruled. http://media2.kjrh.com/html/pdfs/footballdecision.pdf

Not a lawyer, but it seems like a well reasoned decision.

See bottom of page 2 in particular.

I'm not a football official, but I was talking with a basketball partner who does football about this case. He pretty much said the same thing, that the head coach has a window to clarify the enforcement of a penalty (and would be charged a time out or a penalty if he's wrong). If this head coach never used this window, then that's a glaring error on the coach, and he should have owned up to that and stopped this appeals nonsense.

That doesn't absolve the crew from this error at all, but some responsibility has to go on the coach.

Who knows if they would have listened to him though?

I just can't believe that with five officials on the field, someone didn't step up and offer the correct enforcement of the penalty.

I agree with the Court's decision but I do think there should be some kind of review. I would even be willing to accept protests kind of how the NBA does. Not for judgement calls or missed calls. Those are going to happen and it would be too big of a mess to sort out. But here you have an unusual play with an incorrect ruling that clearly impacted the outcome. That's unfair to the losing team. I have no problem if local associations put something in place to lessen the chance of that happening but good luck working that out!

not sure why some of you are hating on the female reporter?
