Time Out with no time on the clock?
The game was about to end and losing team was down by 3pts. They bring the ball up and make a three point attemped, as the ball is in the air, airborne shooter is fouled (shot missed), and properly called as such. Time expires as the foul is called.
Shooter at the line, with no time on the clock and everyone cleared away, makes first attempt, then a Time Out is called by the other team. The Referee's( who are PA. state ref's) grant the Time Out? Shooter goes on and misses the next 2 shots , game over. They later within earshot of the losing team, say "We should have called a Technical"..... |

Yes, but you can not call successive time-out when there is no time on the clock at the end of playing time in the fourth quarter or overtime.
5.11.7 SITUATION B: Following the expiration of time for the first extra period, the coach of Team B is charged with a technical foul. Team B requests a time-out before the free throws are administered to start the second extra period. The time-out request is granted. Thereafter, the official administers the first free throw to A1. Following the attempt: (a) Team B; or (b) Team A, then requests a time-out. RULING: The request cannot be granted in either (a) or (b), as it would be *consid*ered a successive time-out. The fact that the ball did become live between the two requests has no bearing on the ruling. Another time-out request by either team cannot be honored until after the clock has started in the second extra *period. Last edited by Indianaref; Tue Mar 12, 2013 at 12:55pm. |

In this case...yes. Since the 4th quarter has not "ended" yet, they can call a timeout. 5-6-2. As soon as the second shot was missed, the game was over and - as Adam said - the third shot should not have been allowed.
As far as the comment...not sure why the officials would call a T on someone for requesting a timeout that they then granted. Makes me wonder if that is what was really said. |
