Isn't that just as suspect as what happened in your story? All you've done here is instead of charge the coach, you've shifted this to the player. IMO, the other way of doing this is probably closer in having rules support as it's always been established that the head coach is technically responsible for conduct of the bench (and I'm still not even sure if I'd use what your partner did).

+1

Stick the coach until the perp fesses up. There's no provision for a flagrant T on the bench, so you'd probably need to settle for a standard T until Kobe Jr. owns up to the comment; then you can inform the coach that Jr. has been DQd.

10.4.4B In the case of infractions by multiple offenders, the T is charged to the team and indirectly to the HC. I don't see why the same thing couldn't be done in the case where the specific offender is not known.

10.4.4 SITUATION B: Team A coaches and substitutes are all standing during
a free throw by A1. The infraction is detected by the officials. How many technical
fouls are assessed? RULING: In a situation where similar multiple infractions
occur at the same time, it is not the intent of the rules to penalize each individual
infraction as a separate technical foul. One technical foul is charged to Team A
and it is also charged indirectly to the head coach in this situation.

Not at all. Mark's partner was serious.

I can't tell with Mark...his "game management style" is different than mine.
