Isn't that just as suspect as what happened in your story? All you've done here is instead of charge the coach, you've shifted this to the player. IMO, the other way of doing this is probably closer in having rules support as it's always been established that the head coach is technically responsible for conduct of the bench (and I'm still not even sure if I'd use what your partner did).
