It's certainly one way to leverage information.

Let's say you're running up the court, minding your own business, when you hear from the bench behind you, "That ref's a fat f***."

There's no way in hell you're going to let that one get away, but if you don't know who said it, and you can't just charge the bench, what can you do? Threaten the coach as Mark's partner did? Threaten to choose a player to whack, if the little mouth didn't fess up? Is there a preferred option to punish accordingly?
