IMO, the other way of doing this is probably closer in having rules support as it's always been established that the head coach is technically responsible for conduct of the bench (and I'm still not even sure if I'd use what your partner did).

Stick the coach until the perp fesses up. There's no provision for a flagrant T on the bench, so you'd probably need to settle for a standard T until Kobe Jr. owns up to the comment; then you can inform the coach that Jr. has been DQd.
