Violation or not?

A1 scores a basket...

B1 goes to retrieve the ball and fumbles it, still inbounds. B1 trys to grab again and has one foot in and one out, fumbles again. B1 steps inbounds, one foot in, the other up, fumbles it again and finally secures ball and tosses to team mate.

This is close to case play 9.2.2.2c but she really never had control of the ball for a throw in. 4th quarter, two top rated teams in state, less than 5 point margin.

What do you have?

What violation would you call? Throw-in violation? In what way did the player violate?

Why would your arm be swinging?

(or maybe you meant you started the count after she got "control" for the throw-in. IN that case, I agree with you.)

Or after I deemed the ball to be at her disposal.

If she's half a yard inbounds when she throws the ball in, why wouldn't you call a throw-in violation?

The way I read it, I have a throwin violation for not getting OOB for the throwin; unless B2 (the teammate) was OOB for the throwin.

I read it that she never completely made it OOB; or if she did she never had control of the ball while OOB

You read correctly,

She never had control of ball and OOB. She tossed to her player to go up court.

I blew the whistle and told her to get OOB and make the throw in with the baseline free to run. Coach was not happy but she never ever had the ball in control.

Coach should have kissed your feet. You saved him a possession by coaching his player. By rights, once they throw the ball and start moving up court, it's a throwin violation. Don't coach them on this play unless it's lower levels.

I had a very similar situation the other night.

JV Boys and the kid fumbled possession and when he finally gained, was tap-dancing in and out of bounds. It almost cracked me up because it looked like he was dancing on hot coals. Unfortunately for him when he passed it in he was in-bounds. I whistled the violation and they lost possession.

Too many officials take for granted throw-ins after made baskets. You have to make sure and watch the throw-in.
