OOB or held ball?
Here is another one that I need help with.
2 players from different teams firmly grab the ball, and while jugging for the sole control, 1 player loses his balance and has to move several steps and eventually goes OOB. The ball is still being held by both players, while 1 inbound and 1 OOB. Should a "held ball" be called in this case instead of OOB (albeit a little bit late)? Thanks. ysong |

If the held ball happened first, call the held ball.
This is after all why we get paid the big bucks. You have to make some decisions some of the time. Peace

Rather than held ball/oob, why isn't this a travelling violation instead?

Seriously, judging by the description of the OP it sounds as if the held ball clearly came before the travel & OOB. |

Rule 4-25-1, "A held ball occurs when.....opponents have their hands so firmly on the ball that control cannot be obtained without undue roughness." The player never falls without a struggle for the ball. How can you call a travel if you believe both individuals were struggling for the ball? Peace

I assumed the "travelling" was out of the question because neither player had the control of the ball.
Interestingly, does that mean both players are free from the "travelling" restriction until one gets the control of the ball or the whistle is blown? Thanks. |

If both play is not in control of the ball, they cannot travel now can they? What do you want to call a double traveling violation?
Peace
