I agree with everyone else saying do them both. I see absolutely no conflict.
In the states I've worked (KS and SC mainly, with a little NE and MO) it's normal to work a double-header with girls and boys the same night. |

As for telling the coaches. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Why tell them? Perception. I'd rather them not believe I was a slacker who got to the sophomore game in the 2nd quarter. I'd rather be known for my own screwups than for mine plus someone else's. I just tell them that I was not assigned this game but was here so I'm filling in....no reference to the varisty game needed. I also tell the administrator so they know that their varsity crew is already there. That is so they don't worry that no officials have arrived for the varsity game when game time is getting close.

When I was in NE Kansas, I did quite a few triple-headers...one of the JV games (B or G, depending on who was playing in the "big" gym) and then both V games. |

Fill in
For the fill in question, you should ALWAYS help out an official in need. Working by yourself is no fun at any level.
I once was working a Sophmore game before a big time varsity game of two arch rival schools in the suburban Chicago area. I was a varsity official in this league and got a call at 4:30 for a 5:30 start. I agreed to fill in since I did not have a game that night. Well the other guy does not show up. I know the varsity and jv coaches of both teams and they cooperate quite well. The three big time guys show up at halftime and refuse to fill in and help. Quote, "This game is below what I work". I was POed. I called assigner, they lost all the rest of the games that they had in this conference for rest of year and the next. I also kicked them out of the officials lockeroom with not very many nice words to them. I have yet to forget how that felt. The coaches backed me up to the assigner and were a great deal of help. |

Get Permission ???
Here in my little corner of the Land of Steady Habits, as a varsity official, we have to get permission from both varsity head coaches to help out in the junior varsity game before our varsity game due to a no show, injury, illness, etc. I guess that some varsity coaches may not want us to get tired doing two games in a row. I've never, in 28 years, heard about a a varsity coach, not allowing a varsity official to help out in a junior varsity game before the varsity game.

In Georgia, the Varsity Girls and Boys play back to back in the same gym on the same night, usually 6pm Girls and 7:30 Boys. And the same crew does BOTH games... I would say keep them both and have a good time!

And if I see the JV game before mine is short-handed, you better believe I'm hustling to get dressed to help that person out. Working one-person sucks! |
