Fouling out?

I see Vitale is once again pushing his plan to eliminate "fouling out" and replace it with, essentially, an intentional foul everytime a player with more than a preset number of fouls (5 or 6) commits another personal foul.

Last year, it was apparently in response to Duke having all their players foul out in a game. This year, it's presumably in response to Georgetown losing their stud with only 16 minutes of playing time.

Gotta love Dickie V; what a maroon.

I'd appreciate it if you'd continue directing your ridicule elsewhere. It hurts my feelings.

Wasn't that tried for a while in the Big East back in the 80's?

Exclamation

Hey - here's a novel idea. If you want to stay in the game, DON'T FOUL!

The Big East experimented with allowing 6 personal fouls before disqualification, but I don't think they ever went to the "no fouling out" that Vitale suggests.

The NBA actually has a similar provision, but it only kicks in when there are no eligible substitutes left. You can't play with less than 5 players in the NBA, unlike NFHS and NCAA; so when you only have 4 eligible players left, the first player that fouled out returns to the game. Every personal foul he commits also earns a T.

It's a variation of the "keep-the-stars-in" mentality.

My understanding is that the Big East gave up the experiment because players were, surprise, commiting more fouls.

On Mike and Mike in the Morning on ESPN radio this morning, Steven A. Smith wholly supported Dickie V's idea. He rationale ... of course ... the horrid nature of officiating both in the college and pro ranks the "last several years." It made me sick just listening to it.

I also remember that there was some concern about Big East players having to adjust to five fouls during the NCAA tournament.

Steven A. Smith is an idiot. I've never liked him. I cringe when he's on ESPN The Reporters.
