[QUOTE=RoyalsCoachMy question involves incorrect application of the rules. How do I handle these during a game and after the game? Is there any hope during the game? During a game can I get another official to give the incorrect official additional information ( correct rule) and have the call changed? [/QUOTE]

It will rarely work, but you can try asking questions: Are you sure that's the correct rule? I thought the rule was .... Can you ask your partner to be sure?

Then follow up with, "Let's each look this up after the game, so we'll both know for the next time."

It won't help with this game, of course, but it might help in the long run.

For the current game situations, I agree with bob jenkins. Try to diplomatically ask your question about the rule, he gives good examples. If the crew does get together to discuss the rule, you have a chance to get the correct ruling applied. If not, maybe they will at least talk about it at half time or post game and go to the books to get the correct rule/application for next time. Personally, I would even OK if you caught us after the game to discuss the rule, provide you approached us in the right way. Some may not agree with this but I feel, as evidenced by the early replies that a lot officials do not know or mis-apply rules. Provided your approach is done in a "learning" mode, whether in game or post game, I'd have no problems with it.

Coach, my advice is to just ignore it. You're not likely to get the official to reverse a call, and these things tend to even out over the course of the game, anyway. If an official is ignorant of a rule, he is usually ignorant for both teams.

If you worry too much about calls, you end up losing focus, and your players end up thinking they've been wronged. Even if the officials know the rules, they'll miss calls because they were looking elsewhere or had their view blocked. You're better off just treating what you think is a bad call as just another turnover.
