I'm not sure it was a good idea. I still play softball, and it's been a couple of years () since I played baseball, but even I know to start the DP from 2nd to 1st. But the way Carpenter was pitching, it didn't mean much in the end anyway.

Now, I'm still amazed how they find these things out - but right after that happened, they came up with a stat that said the last time a 1-5-3 double play happened in the W.S. was in 1923.

Well until last night, Carpenter hadn't had a solid outting in the postseason. He was certainly due. I except Suppan to give the Redbirds another good start as well. But, you never know, that's why they play the games! Go Cards!

In all fairness to Inge, I'm not sure I can let him share in any of the blame. First, if I was him, I wouldn't really be expecting a throw. But he was by the bag; his feet were right next to the bag and he was diving/falling back to the shortstop side to try and get the throw, which was way off. So I think I can let him off the hook.

But, I do agree it took a long time for Monroe to finally get to the ball. I think even I might've been able to score from 1st in that amount of time.

And, I do also agree with you: kids. But Uncle Jimmy will get them back on the straight and narrow for game 4, right?

That was my thought exactly, Mick. I didn't play a lot of organized baseball as a kid, but I remember "get the lead runner". Maybe that's what went through Zumaya's head, too.

Leaving any particular player out of the discussion, what is the point of filing for free agency? If your contract has expired with your previous club, why aren't you just automatically a free agent? What does "filing" accomplish?

Also, is it true that they've removed the "penalty" regarding signing with your old team by a certain date? If I remember correctly, that rule was the basis for one of the "collusion" lawsuits the players filed. It was when nobody signed Tim Raines as a free agent and he had to wait till May 1 to re-sign with the Expos.

To be quite honest, I really don't know all of the ins-and-outs of how it works. I think that if you don't file, you can only negotiate a new contract with your last team. If you file, you can negotiate with any team.

And, yes, I read somewhere too that they removed that signing date from the new labor contract.

And yes, LaRussa is, was, and remains the ultimate dickhead in all of MLB.

Couple of interesting stories out there today.

Rangers hire Ron Washington as their new manager. He was the A's 3rd base coach, and I don't think he has any managerial experience, even in the minors. Should be interesting, since the Rangers are already guaranteed to win the World Series next year.

Yanks pick up Sheff's option, but are already talking to about 7 teams about a trade for him.

And Pedro's already talking about retirement if this rehab doesn't go well. I hope it doesn't come to that.
