Team Going Wrong Way

OT starts and the teams proceed to go the wrong way all OT. With 1 second remaining in OT, team A scores to tie the game. Team B calls timeout to set up a play. During timeout it is finally realized that teams were going the wrong direct. I realize all activity counts up until this time and now you switch directions.

Question is where does the ball get put inbounds? Rule book seems to indicate under the same basket where the last basket was just scored. But if that is the case, team B now gets the ball under their own basket with 1 second left instead of needing to go 90 feet.

Can anyone tell me if this seemingly unfair (to team A) situation, is indeed proper application of the rules? Or would you have team B go to the other end of the court to inbound the ball?

Purpose And Intent Of The Rules ...

4-5-4: If by mistake the officials permit a team to go the wrong -
direction, when discovered all points scored, fouls committed, and time
consumed shall count as if each team had gone the proper direction. Play
shall resume with each team going the proper direction based on bench
location.

5.2.1 SITUATION E: During the pregame practice period, the visiting team properly uses the east goal and the home team the west goal. The officials, by mistake, allow the jumpers to face the wrong direction to start the game. A1 controls the tap by tapping the ball back to A2. A2, realizing that he/she had warmed up at the basket behind A1, dribbles to that basket and scores an uncontested basket. RULING: Score the basket for Team A. The officials should stop the game and emphasize to both teams the proper direction. The mistake is an official's error by allowing A1 and B1 to face the wrong direction; not a correctable error.

5.2.1 SITUATION F: During the pregame practice period, the visiting team properly uses the east goal and the home team the west goal. The officials, by mistake, allow the jumpers to face the wrong direction to start the game. Several baskets are scored before it is recognized that both teams are throwing the ball into the opponent’s basket. RULING: All points scored count as if the teams had gone the right direction and scored in their own basket. Once the mistake is recognized, play shall continue with each team attempting to score in its own basket. (4-5-4)

Ninety feet away, by purpose and intent of the rules.

B gets possession”BALL” exactly where it should have been : all of the end line at team “A” goal- opposite team “B” goal

Billy and Matt thanks but I need rule to support that. In NFHS 7.5.7 it says, "a throw in anywhere along the end line after a goal or awarded goal for basket interference or goaltending by a defensive player, as in rule 9-12 Penalty 1, the team not credited with the score must make a throw in from the end of the court where the goal was made..."

This seems to indicate not 90 feet away and I need a rule or exception or case study which states that it should be 90 feet away. I don't think spirit of the rule can apply here over what looks to be so clear above.

Thanks!

So, you're going to give them the ball under their own basket AND let them run? That's the literal reading.

Try this: the "end of the court where the goal was made" means "A's basket," not "the basket on the east end of the court" (although they are usually the same). So, when the teams switch ends, "A's basket" is now the west end, and that's where the throw in will take place.

We often concentrate on advantage/disadvantage in regard to The Intent And Purpose Of The Rules. In this case, however, we should pay attention to this statement: It is important to know the intent and purpose of a rule so that it may be intelligently applied in each play situation.

"Intelligently applied".

In addition we're also putting one team at an advantage not intended by the rules, and the other team at disadvantage not intended by the rules, if we give the ball to the Team B under it's own basket.

A player or a team should not be permitted an advantage which is not intended by a rule. Neither should play be permitted to develop which may lead to placing a player at a disadvantage not intended by a rule.

"Intended". "Not Intended".

2-3: The referee shall make decisions on any points not specifically covered in the rules.

Put the ball on the floor where it belongs and then spin the entire court, heck spin the entire arena, around 180 degrees. Where does the ball end up? That's where it belongs, and now allow the teams to go in a direction according to where their benches are (and what half it is).

How about making the teams switch benches for the last second?

How about having the ten players on the court switch uniforms?

... physically move the baskets (but NOT the backboards -- they are not relevant to this rule!) from one end of the court to the other.
