You know, we all make fun of it, but it does communicate to a coach that you acknowledge the defender had the right idea, but didn't achieve or sustain verticality when contact occurred.

If I'm a coach, that tells me that the official saw the whole play and made an informed judgment. Other signals that we have at our disposal (IUOH, block, push) just don't paint as good a picture of what the official was judging on a verticality call.

So…I admit it looks hokey, but I do like what the Frankenstein communicates.
