If he does not "report", he is simply an "unannounced sub" - which is perfectly legal (assuming of course he IS a "legal" sub), regardless of when or if anyone ever "notices" his entry into the game.

While not especially "courteous", there is NO penalty for an unannounced sub - EVER. (Again, assuming he is "legal".)

If you are speaking in the context of FED, see 3-1-1, particularly the a.,b., etc. part.

The answer is "true". A player need not report.

Don't fall for that trick. I actually had an ejection a few years ago because the manager just wouldn't let it go that I didn't call him out.

3.08 (a) If no announcement of a substitution is made, the substitute shall be considered as having entered the game when_

(1) If a pitcher, he takes his place on the pitcher's plate;

(2) If a batter, he takes his place in the batter's box;

(3) If a fielder, he reaches the position usually occupied by the fielder he has replaced, and play commences;

(4) If a runner, he takes the place of the runner he has replaced.

(b) Any play made by, or on, any of the above mentioned unannounced substitutes shall be legal.





All these scenarios assume the player in question is otherwise eligible to enter the game.
DO NOT confuse this with batting out of order. It's a different animal altogether.
