I do not think there is a need to rag on the guy about this. The bottom line is the helmet looks silly. No where have I read this is an acceptable piece of equipment for umpires. For one there is no need for a base umpire to need one. Players do not wear helmets on the field, why should we? And getting hit with the ball let alone in the head is also very rare unless you are someone that has no athletic ability what so ever. Unless this becomes mandated, and I see no reason it would be, this is just a bad idea from the start.

Well the fact that Joe West is on the field is another issue all together.

Secondly, we are not base runners that are focusing running and not following the ball. Umpires follow the ball and you do not see the 8 players in the field wearing helmets do you? And we are behind the pitcher.

I don't see the need for players to get hurt playing games when it can be prevented. Our adult softball leagues now use safety bases and made steel spikes illegal.......we do have to go to work Monday morning. Just my views.....I also wear my seat belt when I drive. Steel spikes?? Not needed. Blood on the diamond is not necessary when kids are playing the game. "Everybody raise their hands if they want to go to the emergency room to get stitches in the leg today!!" Yes, It happens, but not when it could've been prevented.

I finally broke down and bought my first "West Vest". Enough of those bruises, I'm get less tough as I get older.

But honestly, I tend to overheat on summer days, if this helmet helps me stay cooler, BINGO, I'm a happy camper!

That is just BS. You an apply a tag legally and still get spiked. Getting spiked is a job hazard for middle infielders, to be expected from time to time.

A hazard? Maybe. I don't remember ever seeing a player get spiked while making a tag, though I won't deny that it does happen.

I have seen many players hit by pitchers. Several of them had to leave the game - some with broken bones. It would seem that a pitched ball is a much greater hazard. Maybe we should suggest the use of Nerf balls.
