You are right, the wording of that MLB.com definition does make it seem like fielder's choices are separate from outs. One reason I am asking is because Wikipedia page for FC says "A batter who reaches base safely as the result of a fielder's choice is not credited with a hit; he is effectively charged with an out (and an at bat) just as if he had been put out himself." So are you abolsutely sure a batter is not charged with an out if he hits into a fielder's choice?
