I looked through the official rules. Although Section 6: The Batter tells us "A batter has legally completed his time at bat when he is put out or becomes a runner" and then goes on to state in what ways batters are out and become runners, and Section 10: The Official Scorer tells us what an at bat is not:
"Number of times batted, except that no time at bat shall be charged when a player:
(i) hits a sacrifice bunt or sacrifice fly;
(ii) is awarded first base on four called balls;
(iii) is hit by a pitched ball; or
(iv) is awarded first base because of interference or obstruction"
I couldn't find anything in the rulebook in terms of stats that could help make the formula more accurate e.g. whether sac flies(not an at bat) are counted as flyouts(at bat), whether fielder's choices are outs, if so are they flyouts groundouts or neither.

Also, unfortunately the official team site doesn't list fielder's choices or reached on error.
