Help! What stats are at bats composed of?

Hi everyone, I'm trying to find out the formula for at bats (besides subtracting the difference between plate appearances and at bats).

Is this formula correct?
AB=H+GO+SO+(AO-SF assuming AO includes SF; SFs are not ABs.
Do sac flies count as fly outs?)+reached on error.

Using this formula, 10/13 Braves with the most AB(excluding Teixeira) had calculated ABs slightly less than actual AB(the difference is presumably when they reached on errors), 2/13 had calculated AB=actual ABs, and 1/13 had 3 more calculated ABs than actual, for some reason.

Ever since I discovered ABs were different from PAs, I've been trying to find out the formula and have based it on information mostly obtained from wikipedia and MLB.com stat abbreviations page:
MLB.com's definitions:
Ground out= The total of all ground balls hit by the batter into outs, not including bunts. (So i stopped subtracting SH from GO, as if GO had included SH which are not ABs)
At Bat: A batter is charged with an at-bat when he makes an out (unless credited with a sacrifice bunt or sacrifice fly), or reaches base on a base hit, on a fielding error or on a fielder's choice. A batter is not charged with an at-bat if he is credited with a walk or hit by pitch, or reaches base on catcher's interference.

If anyone could help with this formula I'd appreciate it very much. Thank you,
:):):):):):):):):):)

This link might help:

If you do a simple Google search for "baseball scoring", or words to that effect, you'll find dozens of websites to help you out.

(Fair warning: Umpires tend to get cranky when asked questions about scoring and statistics!)

Thanks Bretman, I checked MLB.com definition and have modified my original post

First post still Greek to us umpires. We don't care about Rule 10. The first nine are enough for us to memorize.

See what I mean... ;)

I usually rip out Section 10 from my rule books and use the pages for toilet paper in the port-a-potties! :eek:

100% Redneck Answer: Canadian maple, American white ash, black hickory, Mexican hickory, and Carribean bamboo.

Baseball Umpire Trivia:
1) Since 1970, how many MLB players have been caught using a "corked" bat?
2) What OBR rule is used to eject and/or suspend each player?

Are we starting from scratch, again?
See Post #1: At Bat: A batter is charged with an at-bat when he makes an out (unless credited with a sacrifice bunt or sacrifice fly), or reaches base on a base hit, on a fielding error or on a fielder's choice. A batter is not charged with an at-bat if he is credited with a walk or hit by pitch, or reaches base on catcher's interference.
From this info, I presume:
AB = GO + FO + KO + FC + FE + 1B + 2B + 3B + HR
BA = {1B + 2B + 3B + HR} / AB
Pretty sure this info above is right.
PA = GO + FO + KO + FC + SAC(2) + FE + 1B + 2B + 3B + HR + BOB + HBP + CI
OBP = {FC + SAC(2) + FE + 1B + 2B + 3B + HR + BOB + HBP + CI - SAC(2)} / PA
Let me know if these results do not match the Braves performance, 13/13.
We'll tweak it from there. SAC(2) may not count as PA, either.

Hi all, thanks for the responses.

I looked through the official rules. Although Section 6: The Batter tells us "A batter has legally completed his time at bat when he is put out or becomes a runner" and then goes on to state in what ways batters are out and become runners, and Section 10: The Official Scorer tells us what an at bat is not:
"Number of times batted, except that no time at bat shall be charged when a player:
(i) hits a sacrifice bunt or sacrifice fly;
(ii) is awarded first base on four called balls;
(iii) is hit by a pitched ball; or
(iv) is awarded first base because of interference or obstruction"
I couldn't find anything in the rulebook in terms of stats that could help make the formula more accurate e.g. whether sac flies(not an at bat) are counted as flyouts(at bat), whether fielder's choices are outs, if so are they flyouts groundouts or neither.

Also, unfortunately the official team site doesn't list fielder's choices or reached on error.

See PA

No, Neither
PA = GO + FO + KO + FC + SAC(2) + FE + 1B + 2B + 3B + HR + BOB + HBP + CI

You are right, the wording of that MLB.com definition does make it seem like fielder's choices are separate from outs. One reason I am asking is because Wikipedia page for FC says "A batter who reaches base safely as the result of a fielder's choice is not credited with a hit; he is effectively charged with an out (and an at bat) just as if he had been put out himself." So are you abolsutely sure a batter is not charged with an out if he hits into a fielder's choice? :mad: :rolleyes: :cool: :p ;) :D :o :( :) :confused:
