Quickest ejection ever?
Well, I'm sure some of the older guys on the forum have had them quicker. Torre got tossed a couple years back at a plate conference. Anyway...
1st pitch of the game, 3 inches outside. I'm PU. Ball. Bench flares up a little bit. No big deal. 2nd pitch, grounder to SS. Close play at first, BU (who was 71 years old) has him safe. Bench really flares up. After it kind of dies down, manager from the bench says "Alzheimer's is an awful f***** disease isn't it, Blue?", directed at me. I simply pointed at him, took 2 or 3 steps towards him with my finger pointed at him, so he knew it was him, and turned around and gave the heave ho. Was I too uptight? I just feel that when you say the F word, insinuate my partner has a mental disease, and direct it at me by saying Blue, it should be automatic, no? No problems rest of the game... |

I'd say that you had partner's back on that one.
It's a source of ongoing amazement with me that people can be so very offensive and think that it's funny if the butt of the joke is out of earshot. I guess that makes me a slow learner...

Good job...
Handled perfectly if the EJ got the participants under control.
As wise old umpire once told me that each of us has their own threshold for the amount of sniping or type of comments we're willing to let slide. That being said, most coaches will get to know your pressure points and will stay away from those types of remarks. Coaches that know me, know that I'll let the occosional curse word go, but any remark intended to belittle me, my partner, or our families is pretty much automatic. Even if the remarks were not meant to be heard by me, they're still a no-no. Good job on this one... you're a good partner who understands that the crew is a team!

No, you weren't too uptight. F-Bomb, gone. Alzheimer's remark, even w/o the F-bomb, gone. Directed to me or not, gone. It was obvious to whom rat was directing his remark. Ever wonder why someone would make a remark like that one, about Alzheimer's Disease, but would never say something along those lines about cancer ? I'm glad that was your game and not mine. Although I am far from a hot-head on the field, I know I would have reacted a good deal harsher to the remark, as my Grandmother, my last remaining grandparent, suffers from the affliction.

Sounds as if you did the right thing.
Didn't Billy Martin get himself ejected during World Series pre-game conference?

Thanks ya'll.
I felt confident about it - the only reason I posted for responses was one of my pre-Fall Ball goals was to dance the dance with coaches a bit better. I'm going to post on today's happenings above. |

I dont think so....but Weaver probably got ejected from more than a few games at the conference....probably by Luciano and/or Haller....not to mention Garcia....or Denkinger, or Brinkman or Baby Davey Phillips or....... |

Umpires don't eject players or managers. Players and managers eject themselves. This guy did just that by using both the F bomb, and a personally directed attack. Good job!
