HS and NCAA women - by the book - no.
The ref however cannot legally ask for the tape to be taken off to inspect. As far as I’m concerned - for HS it’s enough for the coach to confirm that the players are compliant with the jewelry rule. NCAA - I don’t ask. |

Note that medical alert medallions and religious medals are not jewelry and have separate rules. |

Then in the last bulletin Ryan MacDowell asked that we take it easy and only interfere if something is in our face. How do you go about enforcing the “should be removed” part on suspected taped over jewelry? Last edited by IK13; Mon Oct 14, 2024 at 11:47am. |

Cuffs (what you refer to as loos, I think) (Top 2 LEGAL; bottom ILLEGAL because of the chain): https://www.google.com/imgres?q=cuff...00&hcb=2&itg=1 |

That’s my point - to enforce the rule, one has to actually see the jewelry underneath it. Which can only happen if the player happens to take off the tape in front of the ref (and the ref notices). Rules without ways of enforcement are useless imo. |

In NCAAW Basketball, we are supposed to have them take the tape off (the only tape that's allowed is to tape back the earlobe when someone has a large empty hole where a gauge earring would normally be worn).
In VB -- I just ask what is being worn under the tape. Yes, someone could lie. So far, they've just taken the tape off and removed the jewelry. |

It can't be worn to cover something illegal. Certainly tape can be worn, and is all the time. Check wrists, fingers, etc...

My post was intended to dispute the idea that officials aren't allowed ("legally") to ask. |

You cannot insist that they take the tape off so you can check out for yourself. Last edited by IK13; Thu Oct 17, 2024 at 04:42am. |

I think you can use 9.2.2 (emphasis added) and the rule "taping over jewelry is not permitted" to ask to see what's under the tape (or to use any of the other methods mentioned here).
19.2.2 Scope of Authority The first referee directs the match from his or her arrival at the court until the end of the match This includes: 19221 Having authority over all team members; 19222 Having final authority over all decisions including those not specifically addressed in the rules; 19223 Having authority over other officials and overruling other officials if certain they made an incorrect decision; and 19224 Replacing an official who is not performing functions properly |
