R2 and lineup card

According to the NFHS, are line-up cards still required by the R2? Case book says may, rules book says "shall".

The card is "required" to check the initial lineup. After that, you can use it if need be, but are not required to.

When working NFHS matches, I just grab some scrap paper to write the lineup down, check the lineup, then don't touch the paper again until the next set, when I repeat.

This week, our high school regional supervisor advised us that line-up cards were mandatory. It was my understanding that the NFHS changed this quite a few years ago and made it a "tool" for the R2, not a requirement.

2014 NFHS Case Book - Rule: 5.5.3

5.5.3 SITUATION B:

The second referee may keep notations on a lineup card for illegal player equipment/uniforms, warnings, penalties or disqualifications for unsporting conduct.

RULING: Correct procedure.

COMMENT: The second referee is not required to keep this information on the lineup card but may do so if preferred. The second referee is responsible to confirm these violations with the scorer. The starting lineup must be recorded on and verified using the second referee's lineup card.
