I've been doing this 21 years. I study for the tests, and constantly read and post on boards like this one. I go to clinics and listen. I seek out my betters and try to learn from them. Sadly, some of the guys who came up the same time as I did have not cracked open a rulebook since those first years, and like to sit in the back at the clinics and talk about fishing.

Mid 30's might equal 35... 35 + 20 = 55 or is it my reading skills that are wrong? |

I think what's wrong is your assumption that the umpire he was talking to began his umpiring at birth. If he began at 15, that makes him 70.

Not to worry. On this board, those who will already were, with or without permission.

What I did see was his officiating ID number. As far as I know they are issued in order based on when you register. My number is 6 digits starting with a 5. His is 5 digits starting with a 1. I only recall one person I've worked with that had a number lower. That guys number was in the low 1000's and he passed away last yea at 101 years old. He was still working as a clerk at track meets well into his 90's. He was the guy who forgot more about track and field in the state than anyone else likely knew. He was a very successful HS coach for years well before he began his full time official. |

OK. Wasn't replying to you ... was defending your guestimate, actually. But ok. Lesson learned.
