Many non-umpires will call balls that are fouled "straight back" as in "straight back to the backstop" foul tips, which we know they are not.

Besides, all foul tips go straight back into the catcher's hand or mitt. So, technically, his description is a bit redundant.

Had a coach one time argue that I should eject a catcher for obstruction when his runner was obstructed at the plate.

Okay coach.

"she can't be there" (I know, that's why I called obstruction)

"You've gotta eject her!" (You must be joking)

Maybe redundant, but certainly not inaccurate.

Seriously, no offense, Manny, but "a bit redundant" and "No, I think you know better" don't really jive here. Just admit you misread it when you thought he'd said something incorrect and move on.

Umm, let me see... Yup, I did use after my post. At least that's what I see on my computer. Perhaps it didn't translate to anyone elses??

Love the coach's interpretation of the 15 run mercy rule. Re: foul tips. Doesn't have to be a JV coach. Years ago back in CNY had an experienced varsity coach ask me why R1 on first could run to 2nd on a foul tip if it was a foul ball.
Think it is inexcusable for an umpire not to know it.

It was pretty clear to me that it WAS a foul tip.
