You articulated the contradiction as I saw it... thank you. I wanted to be clear (for myself and others) that this contradiction obviously exists, and that the game situation will dictate how and what gets called.

As was the case with the dropped glove OP I had on Monday. DC wants me to call the out. I explained to him that R1 has the right to advance to 2B without liability to be put out, and she did nothing wrong to deserve being declared out. He grumbled a little, but accepted the answer.

And this is one of the reasons I want to do away with the rule. This year, even the NUS endorsed this rule as a tool for a certain purpose, not as a game strategy or "gotcha".
